“Bring your own lampshade”

Song: Swingin’ Party
Artist: The Replacements
Album: Tim

Everyone say Let It Be is so great, but I like Tim better. Does 2:00 count as a solo, even though it’s slow and crystal clear? Whatever it is, I love the tone of the guitar: simple, resonant, and plaintive. I also love how the bass line pops out after the “side by side” at the end of each verse. Some of the lines are borderline melodramatic, but I think being stilted is part of the charm. Paul Westerberg’s unadorned vocals aren’t reaching or trying too hard, so the awkwardness of it all seems to come from a sincere place:

“if being wrong’s a crime, I’m serving forever”
“if being strong’s your kind, I need help here with this feather”
“if being afraid is a crime, we hang side by side”

A quiet song before bed.
